3 Causes of a Toothache

Hi, I’m Dr Debraj Chakraborty, the principal dentist of Carina Gardens Dental here at Carina in Brisbane. You can call me Dr Raj.

Every day, we see at least one or two emergency patients come in with a toothache. Just an hour ago, I attended to an emergency patient from Norman Park, who has been having a toothache for a few days, and he couldn’t figure out what the cause was.

So in this video, we are going to talk about toothaches.

One main reason for a toothache is a chipped tooth or a broken tooth. You could have bitten something hard and cracked the tooth. If it is a chipped tooth or a broken tooth, then we need to take X-rays and find out whether the nerve is involved or it’s just a chipped tooth, which can be an easy fix.

Another reason for toothache could be pain from an impacted wisdom tooth. Depending on the situation, you might need to have the wisdom tooth removed.

The next most common cause of toothache is actually from gum disease or periodontitis. Now, gum pain or periodontitis is quite serious. It is an infection of the gums that can result in mild to moderate toothache. It is a dull ache and then bleeding from the gums. This can lead to severe infection and swelling, and sometimes, even loss of tooth. It all starts with the bacterial plaque and becomes hardened calculus over time.

If you haven’t been to the dentist for some time, this can lead to infection around the gums and the surrounding bone. Gum disease has also been linked to heart problems and Alzheimer’s too.

Almost 43% of the Australian population suffer from some sort of gum disease. So it is quite common to have a toothache caused by infected gums.

But the good news is that a regular six-monthly professional clean at the dentist can easily prevent this.

Each problem is quite different, and we need to investigate further to find out what exactly has been happening and then we can fix it for you.

When it comes to toothache, a regular dental checkup and cleaning is the key. With this, the dentist can pick up anything brewing in your mouth and fix them quickly, which helps you not to pay for major procedures later down the track.

Small problem, quick fix, and off you go.

So if you haven’t been to the dentist for a while, and you feel now is the time, we would love to take care of you.
