3 Reasons for Dental Crowding
Hi, I’m Dr Debraj Chakraborty, the principal dentist of Carina Gardens Dental here at Carina in Brisbane. You can call me Dr Raj.
Last Monday, I met with a new patient, James, who lives just a few blocks from our dental practice here in Carina.
During our consultation, he told me that he used to have really straight teeth growing up. But in the last year, he notice his teeth are looking a bit crooked and crowded. He asked me why that was happening. Because we treat many orthodontic patients, we get asked this question quite often. So I thought I’d make a short video sharing with you three reasons for dental crowding.
Dental crowding can definitely be noticed more and more as we age. The reason behind it is that our teeth are always in a continuous state of movement. Just like other parts of our body, our teeth are changing all the time.
Another reason is because of our jaw bone, it can also have changes which can lead to less space between our lower front teeth, causing crowding.
Finally, the third reason we find, a lot of times actually, is periodontal disease or gum disease. Gum disease, which you may or may not be aware of, can cause the bone to become depleted, meaning you get less and less of the bone supporting the teeth. This causes the teeth to move and create spaces between the teeth and making it look more gappy.
I hope now you get a sense of why your teeth are becoming crowded or gappy. If you’re looking to get them straightened out, we’d love love to help you.
