What are Dental Emergencies?
A dental emergency is when trauma takes place to your teeth. It may be due to an accident or an infection that seems to suddenly arise. You may feel tooth pain or pain in a series of teeth. Damaged teeth can be an emergency and can happen from biting a seed or nut or due to trauma to the face such as in a sports or vehicular accident. The following are some common dental emergencies that we see here at Carina Gardens Dental:
Damaged or loose dental crowns or dental bridge
Lost dental fillings
Wisdom teeth problems with pain and swelling

Certain situations will require a visit to an ED, even if it is in the area of your mouth. For example, the dental office is not equipped to treat broken bones and similar traumas. These include:

While You’re Waiting…
Dental emergencies can happen any time of the day or night. Sometimes our staff may not be available to help for a few hours, but there are things you can do at home until you can come see us. The following are some tips to temporarily help with different types of dental emergencies.
reduce tooth pain
Toothache
Toothaches can affect one tooth and radiate to cause pain in surrounding teeth, as well. It can feel like a dull toothache or severe tooth pain. First, gently rinse your mouth with tepid saltwater to ward off bacteria and gently brush and floss with extra care around the tooth. Sometimes pain can be caused by trapped food or debris, and may be rinsed away. Try placing clove oil or crushed cloves onto the tooth to numb it. If you are not allergic, take an over-the-counter pain medication to reduce pain and swelling and call us right away for a dental exam and treatment.
treat jaw pain
Jaw Swelling
Jaw swelling can indicate an infection in a tooth root, gum or a problematic wisdom tooth. An icepack on the face in the area of the swelling may reduce swelling and pain. Over the counter pain medications can help alleviate pain and swelling while you wait for a dental appointment. Schedule an emergency dentistry appointment with us right away so we can treat any infection, and stop it from spreading. We will also diagnose and treat the dental problem that led to infection.
restore your tooth
Broken, Chipped or Cracked Teeth
If you have an accident that causes a broken, chipped, or cracked tooth, rinse with tepid saltwater to reduce any bacteria. Save the piece of tooth and bring it with you to your emergency dental appointment. In some cases, we may be able to save it and if not, we can find an alternative dental solution to save your tooth.
save your tooth
Knocked Out Tooth
Accidents due to sports, vehicle crash or any other blow to the face can knock out a tooth, but you don’t have to live with it missing. Call us right away for an emergency dental visit to see how we can help. If you have it, place the tooth in tepid saltwater or whole fat milk, cover and bring it to the dental appointment with you. Be sure to let us know what happened when you call because time will be a factor that may help us save your tooth.
dental restoration
Broken Crown, Bridge or Restoration
Sometimes trauma can cause problems to a dental prosthesis or restoration. You may see the damage or in some cases, it may simply feel “off.” Call us either way to schedule an emergency dental visit. In many cases, the sooner the problem is addressed, the less complicated and costly the repair may be.
These tips are for temporary relief only. Even when the pain subsides, the problem still exists so it is very important to follow through with your dental visit so we can provide long-term treatment. As soon as you have a dental emergency, call our office to schedule an appointment. Inform the receptionist that you have a dental emergency so you will be scheduled as soon as possible.
